Led by a panel that boasts over 80 years of combined experience, our recent SAP Tax and Revenue Management (TRM) webinar was nothing short of enlightening. The conversation took place on July 29th with our 5 panelists: Shyam Jajodia, Todd Gardner, Leon Biegalski, Antish Awootar (of LSI an Invenio Company), and Kelli Kitch (of SAP). These seasoned professionals have all worked with Tax and Revenue Management in varying capacities and angles, giving you a 360° perspective of how TRM works and how it can impact your organization.

Why SAP TRM?

To put it simply, it's time to upgrade! In the United States, many government agencies are using outdated systems for Tax and Revenue Management that are clunky and time-consuming, making them frustrating to use.  EVP Shyam Jajodia says, "Governments today are working with ancient tax and revenue management systems that were built in the mainframe era. SAP Tax and Revenue Management enhances taxpayer experience on any device, automates complex tax processes, and improves tax collection by driving down delinquencies through real-time analytics and machine learning.” The list of TRM benefits is both long and versatile. Kelli Kitch shares, "The great part about the solution is that it goes beyond just collecting tax and revenue. You can collect other revenues as well..." SAP TRM is an all-encompassing software that can be fully customized to meet the needs of the customer.

In 2001, the State of Florida became the first customer to implement SAP TRM (Tax and Revenue Management), and Leon Biegalski the former Executive Director of the Florida Department of Revenue conveyed, "In the 90s FDOR relied on aging legacy tax systems, that were segmented by tax type, that were not easily modified. Then in 2001 DOR implemented corporate income tax in an ERP environment. There are now over 34 taxes associated with over 1.5 million accounts supporting the annual collection of over $44 billion in taxes and fees and processing 9.3 million returns".

Some of the most compelling features of TRM is that it gives the tax collector full analytics to make real-time decisions and its industry-leading configuration platform. A great example of this is when Todd Gardner explained how the effective dating feature, which exists for virtually every relevant data element in the system, can make a huge impact on easing the workload of a tax collector and provide enhanced service to taxpayers. Todd explained "For someplace like Florida, there may be 5 hurricanes that make landfall in a given year, and the governor would declare emergency provisions in specific areas hardest hit by the storm. So, the DOR would be charged with suspending tax collection steps in those regions for a specific duration. The ability to use effective dating to suspend those activities for the duration provided in the emergency order in a matter of moments as opposed to weeks or days was hugely valuable"

Antish Awootar, our TRM subject matter expert, gave an in-depth demonstration of both the Backend/Tax office experience and Citizen Portal Service experience.

Q: Is TRM in one SAP module or a combination of modules?

A: It’s one integrated solution on S/4HANA comprised of various components such as Form Processing, Entity Mgt (Business Partner), Public Sector Collections and Disbursement, Doc Management, Portal, Case Management, Business Rule Engine, Etc…

Q: Is the Portal an out-of-the-box part of the solution or something that was built in the cloud platform on top of the TRM module?

A: As mentioned above the portal is included in the solution and delivered with preconfigured content to help you get up and running faster.

Q: What is the difference between TRM and PSCD? Do you have examples of PSCD and TRM integration?

A:  PSCD is a component of the TRM solution and primarily manages the high-volume financial transaction processing such as dunning, charging, settlement, etc. PSCD is a sub-ledger in S/4HANA designed to augment the G/L with detailed transaction-level information that government organizations require.

Q: How was tax rate changed without a transport?

A: Because this was a demo system we make the change directly to illustrate the feature.  As mentioned on the webinar you would almost always make such a change in a DEV environment and then promote through your landscape to Production.

Q: DO we need to utilize cloud or on-premise for these solutions?

A: Either deployment model is supported.

Q: Is this property tax solution compatible with 3rd party CAMA systems?
A:  Yes!

Q: If we do not utilize SAP for our ERP solution is that a barrier to implementing?

A: Not at all.  Our offering stands on its own.
