Transforming Human Resources at the University of Nebraska
Overview
The University of Nebraska, in partnership with the Nebraska State College System (NSCS), represents one of the largest and most influential public education systems in the state. With four campuses—Lincoln (UNL), Omaha (UNO), the Medical Center (UNMC), and Kearney (UNK)—as well as Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges, the system serves approximately 31,000 students, faculty, and staff. ![]()
To support its mission of delivering high-quality education and research, the University sought to modernize its human resources
operations, focusing on improved visibility, consistency, and efficiency across its multi-campus system.
The Challenge
For years, HR operations across the University of Nebraska’s campuses were fragmented:
-
- Six separate recruiting systems and multiple performance management tools were in use.
- HR teams faced duplicative processes and heavy paperwork requirements.
- Leaders lacked centralized workforce data to make informed decisions.
- The employee and candidate experience varied significantly by campus.
This fragmented structure created inefficiencies, limited transparency, and made it difficult to attract and retain top talent. University leadership recognized the need for a unified solution that would streamline HR processes while still accommodating campus-level needs.
The Solution
The University selected SAP SuccessFactors as its human capital management platform, implementing three key modules:
-
- Recruiting – Centralizing applicant tracking, job posting, and communications.
- Onboarding – Automating new hire processes to reduce paperwork and improve efficiency.
- Performance & Goals – Standardizing performance reviews and goal-setting across campuses.
To guide this transformation, the University partnered with LSI Consulting, a firm with extensive higher education expertise. LSI’s proven FocusOne methodology and CampusOne pre-configured template provided the framework for success.
-
- FocusOne offered a five-phase implementation roadmap, emphasizing transparency, stakeholder engagement, and consistent progress.
- CampusOne accelerated deployment by providing higher-education–specific best practices and templates.
- Fit-to-standard workshops helped align HR processes across campuses while respecting unique institutional needs.
The Transformation Journey
Working closely with University stakeholders, LSI helped align HR operations across multiple campuses into a single, cloud-based platform. The transformation emphasized not only technology adoption but also process standardization, change management, and user engagement.
